Return-and-Volley - Technical Reference
Return-and-volley is a tactic worth bringing back into your game: drive a compact, dipping return right at the server's feet, and close the net immediately behind it - turning your return of serve directly into a net approach. It's seen a real resurgence recently, driven by modern polyester strings that let you put genuine dip on the return ball that older strings couldn't produce.
The logic is pure geometry: a dipping return forces your opponent to hit up from a low contact point - a defensive volley that hands you the net advantage before the rally's even properly started.
How It Works
Your return needs to be compact, low, and aimed at the server's feet - not deep in the court, but specifically their shoe zone as they're still completing their service motion. A ball that dips below the net tape and lands at their feet produces a defensive, upward volley regardless of how skilled they are.
Your close happens on the same forward momentum as your return - you're already moving toward the net before your opponent even makes contact with their next shot. That commitment has to happen the instant you strike your return, not after you see where it lands.
The geometric payoff: your opponent is immediately on the back foot at their own baseline, and you own the net. Their defensive volley typically comes back short and high - exactly the kind of ball you want to be standing at net waiting for.
Why This Works Again Now
Modern polyester strings generate spin rates that older natural gut or nylon strings simply couldn't produce. That spin creates a steep arc - the ball clears the net safely, then dips sharply, landing at the server's feet with heavy topspin that keeps accelerating downward through the bounce. That's what's made return-and-volley viable at the professional level again for the first time since the early serve-and-volley era - though for a completely different mechanical reason. The old serve-and-volley game relied on flat or sliced returns and pace to dominate the net. This version relies on spin-induced dip and pure geometric position.
What Execution Actually Requires
Your return has to be compact and accurate. Playing from inside the baseline - which is where you need to be for this tactic - means your full baseline kinetic chain isn't available to you; your backswing is necessarily truncated. The shot works by redirecting your opponent's own pace and spin rather than generating independent power. And your timing demand is real: you have to commit to moving forward as you're striking the return, not after. Hit the return and wait to see where it lands, and you'll get caught in no-man's-land - and a server who half-volleys even a weak dipping return will have time to pass you there.
A Drill Worth Running
Have a ball machine or a live server feed you serves at varying speeds into a specific target zone - cross-court and deep, roughly two meters inside the baseline and one meter from the singles sideline. Ten consecutive returns landing in that box is a successful set. Varying the serve speed between about 120 and 180 km/h forces you to keep adjusting your block-and-drive timing instead of grooving a single response that only works against one pace.
