ART:064: Contact Point Distance from Body and Power Optimization
Executive Summary
The distance of ball contact from the body is a critical power variable. Contact too close to the body reduces the moment arm and power; contact too far reduces control and consistency. The optimal contact point is at full arm extension (without reaching), where the moment arm is maximized and the racket head speed is highest. Elite players consistently contact the ball at this optimal distance, maximizing power while maintaining control.
Contact Distance and Power
Moment Arm Effect
- Longer moment arm = greater linear velocity at the racket head for a given angular velocity
- Full extension maximizes the moment arm
- Optimal contact distance: Just before full extension, where angular velocity peaks
Trade-offs
- Too close: Reduced moment arm, less power, cramped swing
- Too far: Reduced control, reaching, off-balance contact
- Optimal: Full extension with good balance and body rotation
Practical Application: "The Extension Point"
Focus on contacting the ball at full arm extension—your arm should be straight (but not locked) at contact. This maximizes your moment arm and racket head speed. Practice by having a partner feed balls and consciously extend your arm fully at contact. If you find yourself reaching or contacting the ball too close to your body, adjust your positioning or timing to hit the ball at the optimal distance.
