ART-861: Speed Development for Tennis Players

Executive Summary

Speed in tennis is not simply linear sprinting ability—it is the combination of acceleration, maximum velocity, lateral speed, deceleration, and reactive agility that determines court coverage effectiveness. Tennis players rarely reach maximum sprinting speed during matches; instead, they rely on explosive first steps, rapid acceleration over short distances, and quick changes of direction. Speed development for tennis must therefore prioritize acceleration mechanics, first-step quickness, and multidirectional movement over pure linear speed. A comprehensive speed program includes sprint training, plyometrics, agility drills, and reactive speed exercises that replicate the movement demands of competitive tennis.

Tennis Speed Demands

Movement Analysis

Research shows that tennis movement patterns are characterized by: - Short distances: 80% of movements are under 7 meters - Frequent direction changes: 3-5 directional changes per point - Low maximum speeds: Rarely exceeding 70-80% of maximum sprint speed - High acceleration demands: Rapid acceleration from stationary or slow positions - Lateral dominance: More lateral movement than linear movement

Speed Components in Tennis

Component Description Tennis Application
First-Step Quickness Explosive initial movement from ready position Reaching wide balls, attacking short balls
Acceleration Rapid increase in speed over short distances Sprinting to reach balls 3-7 meters away
Maximum Velocity Top sprinting speed Rarely reached; only on extreme defensive plays
Lateral Speed Side-to-side movement speed Court coverage, defensive movement
Deceleration Controlled slowing to set up for strokes Stopping to hit groundstrokes
Reactive Speed Speed of response to external stimuli Reacting to opponent's shot direction
Change of Direction Rapid redirection of movement Adjusting to unexpected ball placement

Sprint Training for Tennis

Acceleration Training

Sprint Distances: 5-30 meters (tennis-specific) Intensity: 95-100% maximum effort Rest: Full recovery (1 minute per 10 meters sprinted) Frequency: 2-3 sessions per week

Acceleration Drills: 1. Standing Start Sprints: 10m, 20m, 30m from standing position 2. Falling Start Sprints: Lean forward, fall into sprint (reactive start) 3. Push-Up Start Sprints: From push-up position, sprint 10m 4. Split-Step Sprints: From tennis ready position, sprint 10m in response to cue

Maximum Velocity Training

Sprint Distances: 30-60 meters Intensity: 95-100% maximum effort Rest: Full recovery (2-3 minutes) Frequency: 1-2 sessions per week

Maximum Velocity Drills: 1. Flying Sprints: 20m build-up + 20m maximum velocity 2. Ins and Outs: 20m at 80% + 20m at 100% + 20m at 80% 3. Hill Sprints: 20-30m uphill sprints (reduced impact, high intensity)

Lateral Speed Training

Lateral Movement Drills

  1. Side Shuffle: 10m lateral shuffle, 3 sets each direction
  2. Crossover Steps: 10m crossover running, 3 sets each direction
  3. Lateral Sprint to Sprint: Sprint 5m forward, shuffle 5m lateral, sprint 5m forward
  4. Lateral Mirror Drill: Mirror partner's lateral movements

Lateral Plyometrics

  1. Lateral Box Jumps: Jump laterally onto and off a box (30-45 cm)
  2. Lateral Bounding: Bound laterally for 5-10 meters
  3. Skater Hops: Single-leg lateral hops, landing on opposite foot

Reactive Speed Training

Reactive Agility Drills

  1. Mirror Drill: Partner moves laterally; player mirrors movements
  2. Ball Drop React: Partner drops a ball; player sprints to catch before second bounce
  3. Light Board React: React to illuminated targets on a light board
  4. Video React: React to video of opponent hitting shots (move in response)
  5. Coach Point React: Coach points in a direction; player sprints that direction

Tennis-Specific Reactive Drills

  1. Ghosting: Coach calls out directions; player moves through court positions
  2. Ball Machine React: Ball machine feeds random directions; player reacts and returns
  3. Shadow Rally: Coach hits balls to random positions; player moves and shadows strokes
  4. Live Ball React: Partner hits balls to random positions; player reacts and returns

Plyometric Training for Speed

Lower Body Plyometrics

Exercise Sets x Reps Rest Focus
Box Jumps (30-60 cm) 3 x 5 2 min Vertical power
Depth Jumps (30-45 cm) 3 x 5 2 min Reactive power

Practical Application: "The Speed Training Circuit"

Combine speed elements into a circuit:

Station 1: 10m sprint from standing start (acceleration) Station 2: 10m lateral shuffle (lateral speed) Station 3: Box jumps x 5 (power) Station 4: Reactive agility (coach points direction, sprint 5m) Station 5: 20m sprint (maximum velocity) Station 6: Lateral bounding x 5 each side (lateral power)

Complete 3-4 rounds with 2 minutes rest between rounds. Total time: 20-25 minutes.
