ART-118: Assessment Battery — Measuring All 5 Pillars

Executive Summary

What gets measured gets improved. This article defines a standardized assessment battery for all five pillars, enabling objective tracking of athlete development over time. Each test is field-expedient (minimal equipment), reliable, and directly tied to on-court performance.

The 5-Pillar Assessment Battery

1. Biomechanical Assessments (Pillar I)

Test Protocol Elite Benchmark
Countermovement Jump 3 trials, best height > 40 cm
Lateral Bound (single leg) Distance, each leg > 90% limb symmetry
Seated Med Ball Rotational Throw Distance, both sides > 8 m (5 kg ball)
Hip IR/ER ROM Goniometer, 90/90 position Total arc > 90°

2. Neuro-Cognitive Assessments (Pillar II)

Test Protocol Elite Benchmark
Reaction Time (visual) Light board, 20 trials avg < 220 ms
Anticipation Occlusion Test Video clips, predict shot direction > 75% correct at -120 ms occlusion
Split-Step Timing Video analysis vs opponent contact Land within ± 50 ms of contact
Cognitive Flexibility Random cue direction change task < 5% errors

3. Technical Assessments (Pillar III)

Test Protocol Elite Benchmark
Serve Speed & Accuracy 10 serves, radar + target zones Speed > 180 km/h; > 60% in target
Forehand Spin Rate 10 balls, spin measurement > 2800 rpm avg
Rally Depth Consistency 20-feed drill, depth measurement > 70% landing past service line
Volley Reaction Volume 1-min rapid feed, clean contacts > 45 clean contacts

4. Tactical Assessments (Pillar IV)

Test Protocol Elite Benchmark
Pattern Recognition Quiz Video scenarios, choose response > 85% optimal choice
Recovery Position Audit Match video, distance from ideal bisector < 1.5 m avg error
Pressure Decision Test Simulated tiebreak, decision log Error rate < 15% on key points

5. Conditioning Assessments (Pillar V)

Test Protocol Elite Benchmark
Repeated Sprint Ability 6 x 20 m, 25 s rest < 3.5 s avg; fatigue index < 5%
Yo-Yo IR1 Standard shuttle protocol Level 17+
Grip Endurance (hold) Max hold at 70% max grip > 45 s
Resting HRV Morning reading, 7-day avg rMSSD > 45 ms

Testing Schedule

  • Baseline: Start of each training block (every 8-12 weeks).
  • Monitoring: HRV daily; split-step and rally depth weekly during technical blocks.
  • Competition Audit: Tactical and neuro assessments via match video review after each tournament.

Practical Application: The "Dashboard"

Build an athlete dashboard: five pillar scores (0-100) trending over time. Training priorities emerge from the lowest quadrant — you don't guess, you measure.
