ART-120: The 5-Pillar Training Week — Periodized Session Blueprint
Executive Summary
Knowledge without structure remains theory. This article provides the weekly training architecture that integrates all five pillars into a coherent, periodized schedule — ensuring technical, tactical, physical, and cognitive development progress in harmony without overtraining.
The Weekly Blueprint (Performance Phase)
Daily Session Structure (90-120 min)
- Neural Activation (10 min): Reaction games, light plyometrics (Pillar I + II).
- Technical Block (30 min): One stroke focus with constraint drills (Pillar III + I).
- Tactical Block (25 min): Pattern play, point construction (Pillar IV + II).
- Conditioning Block (20 min): Day-specific energy system work (Pillar V).
- Integration Play (15 min): Live points with theme constraint (all pillars).
- Recovery & Review (10 min): Breathing, video snippet, one takeaway (Pillar V + II).
Weekly Schedule
| Day | Primary Pillar Emphasis | Session Theme |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | I + III (Biomechanics + Technique) | Ground force and stroke mechanics refinement |
| Tuesday | V-heavy (Conditioning) | Anaerobic power: repeated sprint + serve clusters |
| Wednesday | II + IV (Neuro + Tactics) | Anticipation training, pattern drills, video |
| Thursday | I (Strength) | Strength maintenance, corrective work, mobility |
| Friday | IV + III (Tactics + Technique) | Match simulation, pressure point play |
| Saturday | V-light + Match | Competition or live match play |
| Sunday | V (Recovery) | Sleep priority, active recovery, weekly review |
Load Management Rules
- High/Low Principle: Never stack two high-CNS days consecutively. Tuesday (high) is followed by Wednesday (moderate cognitive).
- Hard ceiling: Total weekly on-court volume capped at 12-14 h for performance athletes; tracks against HRV trend.
- Flex Day: If morning HRV drops > 10% below 7-day average, the day's conditioning block converts to technical-only.
Block Periodization (12-Week Cycle)
- Weeks 1-4 (Accumulation): Volume emphasis — technical reps, aerobic/anaerobic base.
- Weeks 5-8 (Transmutation): Intensity emphasis — power conversion, tactical complexity.
- Weeks 9-11 (Realization): Speed emphasis — match simulation, taper begins.
- Week 12 (Competition/Deload): Taper to tournament or structured deload.
Practical Application: The "Architecture Mindset"
Batches of drills do not make athletes; architected weeks do. Every session has one hashtag: today's theme. If a drill doesn't serve the theme, it doesn't happen today.
