ART-123: Opponent Archetypes — Diagnosing and Dismantling
Executive Summary
Every opponent is a system with a signature. This article defines the six dominant playing style archetypes, their structural strengths and exploitable fault lines, and provides counter-pattern playbooks for each — turning tactical preparation into a systematic process rather than guesswork.
The Six Archetypes
1. The Power Baseliner
- Signature: Heavy first-strike forehand; short aggressive swings; dictates from the baseline.
- Fault Lines: Struggles with junk (low slices, slow pace); movement to wide balls; low volleys when drawn in.
- Counter-Playbook: Vary spin and height (moonballs to backhand); attack with depth not pace; use their pace with block redirects; pull them forward then lob.
2. The Counterpuncher
- Signature: Elite speed and consistency; zero unforced errors; feeds on your pace.
- Fault Lines: No finishing weapon; passive second serve; short angled balls force creation.
- Counter-Playbook: Patient point construction with high margins; attack only on truly short balls; serve-and-first-strike to avoid rallies; accept longer matches — test their conditioning.
3. The Serve-and-Volleyer
- Signature: First-serve rush; net pressure every point.
- Fault Lines: Weak passing-shot cover habits; second serve attackable; baseline rally inferiority.
- Counter-Playbook: Return low at the feet; lob over the net player; pass down-the-line (they shade cross); stretch rallies on their service games.
4. The All-Court Artist
- Signature: Touch, variety, drop shots, angle play; improvisational.
- Fault Lines: Inconsistency under sustained power; hates being rushed; physical beating over 3 sets.
- Counter-Playbook: Big, heavy, central balls deny angles; deep returns to push back their court position; attack second serves; embrace physical games.
5. The Grind-Returner
- Signature: Elite return game; stands deep; turns defense into offense.
- Fault Lines: Vulnerable to wide serves + first volleys; drop shots pull them from deep comfort.
- Counter-Playbook: Wide slider serves; serve-and-volley surprises; drop-shot-and-lob combos; attack their forecourt.
6. The Big Server
- Signature: Free points on serve; tiebreak specialist.
- Fault Lines: Return game weakness; movement; rally tolerance.
- Counter-Playbook: Block returns deep to start neutral rallies; extend every return game; mental discipline in tiebreaks — high-percentage patterns only.
The Pre-Match Scouting Protocol
- Video (if available): Note serve pattern distribution, rally tolerance, error triggers.
- Warm-up read: Grip tells (extreme grips = spin archetype); movement quality; backhand confidence.
- First 2 games: Confirm archetype; identify their Plan B when pressured.
Practical Application: The "System Breaker"
Every archetype is strong where they're practiced and weak where they're not. Your job: force points played in the zones they've never mapped. Structure beats improvisation.
