A landmark 2011 paper from Sports Health that proposes an 8-stage model for analyzing the tennis serve through the kinetic chain. The paper pulls together decades of biomechanics research and clinical experience to give coaches, trainers, and medical professionals a common framework for evaluating serve technique, identifying weaknesses, and reducing injury risk. The 8 stages are grouped into three phases — Preparation, Acceleration, and Follow-Through — and each stage is tied to specific muscle activations and segmental rotations.

Mark Kovacs earned his PhD in Exercise Physiology and has spent his career applying sport science to tennis performance. He has worked with top-ranked ATP and WTA professionals, directed the USTA's Coaching Education and Sport Science department, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in tennis-specific training and biomechanics today.
