The Five Moves Every Great Forehand Shares
Watch old footage of a wooden-racket forehand and then watch Carlos Alcaraz hit one today, and you're not looking at the same shot with better equipment — you're looking at a completely different piece of athleticism. The old forehand was a handshake: step in, swing level, meet the ball out front. The modern forehand is a whip. The body coils like a spring, the hips fire first, and the racket arrives so late and so fast that the ball leaves the strings spinning over 3,000 times a minute. That's not an exaggeration for effect — it's just what a good forehand actually does now, and once you understand why, you'll never coach or hit the shot the same way again.
The Five Moves Every Great Forehand Shares
High-speed cameras have been pointed at professional forehands for decades now — most famously by John Yandell's slow-motion research — and no matter who you study, from Federer to Djokovic to Sinner, the shot breaks down into the same five moves, in the same order, every time.
- You turn and load. The shoulders coil away from the ball, the non-hitting arm reaches out to help you balance and time the incoming shot.
- The racket drops. Not because you push it down — it falls, tip toward the court, loading up like a slingshot being pulled back.
- The legs and hips fire forward. This is where the power actually comes from — a hard push into the ground and a fast rotation of the hips, well before the arm does anything.
- The front hip slams the brakes. This is the move most players never learn, and it's the secret to the whole shot: the hips stop rotating hard and fast, and that sudden stop is exactly what catapults the arm and racket forward.
- The arm whips through and the wrist rolls over. By the time the racket reaches the ball, your forearm is rolling over itself — the "windshield wiper" motion you've heard about — and that's what puts the heavy topspin on the ball.
Every elite forehand you've ever admired runs through these five moves. The differences between players are really just differences in timing and shape, not in the underlying blueprint.
Two Grips, Two Different Forehands
How you hold the racket changes almost everything else about your swing, so it's worth understanding the two grips you'll see at the top of the game.
The Eastern grip — the flatter, more old-school hold used by players like Federer — lets you strike the ball earlier and flatter, with your palm more "behind" the ball. It rewards a player who reads the ball early and takes it on the rise. You get a flatter, more piercing shot, but less natural topspin and a smaller margin for error over the net.
The semi-western grip — what most of today's tour players use, Djokovic and Alcaraz among them — turns your hand slightly under the handle. That small change does something important: it naturally closes the racket face as it drops, so when you swing up and through the ball, you're brushing up the back of it rather than driving flat through it. That's where the heavy topspin comes from, and it's a big part of why the modern game hits the ball harder and still keeps it in the court — the spin pulls the ball down.
There's an even more extreme version, the full western grip, favored by a handful of players who want maximum topspin and take the ball very high off the bounce. It's powerful, but it comes at a cost: it stresses the wrist more than the other two grips, and it struggles on low, skidding balls — the kind you get on grass or off a good slice. If you or a student is dealing with wrist soreness and happens to be gripping the racket that way, that's usually the first thing worth changing.
The practical takeaway: if you're building a forehand from scratch, the semi-western grip is where nearly every modern coach starts a student, because it gives you topspin almost for free and it's forgiving on both low and high balls.
Straight Arm or Bent Arm? Both Work — Here's Why
If you've ever watched Federer and Djokovic hit forehands side by side, you'll notice their arms look completely different at the moment of contact. Federer's is locked out straight. Djokovic's is bent sharply at the elbow, tucked in close to his body. Neither one is wrong — they're two different solutions to the same problem.
The straight-arm forehand creates a longer lever. Think of a longer wrench turning a bolt faster than a short one — for the same rotation speed, a longer arm means the racket head is moving faster at the tip. The tradeoff is that a straight arm needs to be set early. You have to read the ball and get your arm into position well before contact, because there's no folding it in at the last second.
The double-bend forehand — elbow bent, wrist cocked back — is more compact. A shorter, tighter arm is easier to accelerate quickly and easier to adjust late, which is exactly what you need when the ball is coming at you hard and you don't have much time to prepare. This is why it's generally considered the easier, more forgiving version to teach and to learn, especially for a developing player who's still working on early preparation.
Neither shape is "more correct." If you're coaching yourself or a player, match the arm shape to the player's timing: early preparers can get away with the longer lever, late preparers need the compact one.
The Wrist Doesn't Flick — It's Being Thrown Back, and it Snaps on Its Own
Here's the single most damaging piece of advice in tennis, and you've almost certainly heard it: "snap your wrist at the ball." Throw it out. High-speed video makes this completely clear — the wrist doesn't actively flick forward at any point in a good modern forehand. What actually happens is closer to cracking a whip.
Hold the racket loosely — think of holding a bird, not a hammer. As your hips and shoulders explode forward, the racket head is heavy, and heavy things resist being yanked into motion. So while your body races ahead, the racket head lags behind for a beat, and that lag bends your wrist backward — not because you did it, but because inertia did it to you. That backward bend stretches the tendons on the inside of your forearm like a rubber band being pulled taut. And just like a rubber band, once it's stretched, it releases all that stored energy automatically, snapping the racket through contact without you ever consciously "flicking" anything.
This is also where the classic "X-factor" comes from — the stretch you feel across your torso when your hips have already started rotating toward the ball but your shoulders are still turned back. That separation between hips and shoulders is elastic energy, loaded and waiting to be released, in exactly the same way the wrist lag is.
Try this the next time you're on court: grip the racket at about a 2 out of 10 on the tightness scale — as loose as you can hold it and still control it. Let your hips do the work of starting the swing, and just let the wrist go along for the ride. Players who "muscle" the wrist forward are almost always the ones pushing or slapping the ball long, because an active wrist closes the racket face too early and too hard.
The Windshield Wiper and Why the Ball Dives Down
Ever wonder how a player can hit a forehand that clears the net by four feet and still lands inside the baseline? It looks like it should sail long. It doesn't, because of spin.
In the final instant before and through contact, your forearm rolls over rapidly — the racket face sweeping up and across the ball almost like a windshield wiper crossing a windshield. That motion is what puts heavy topspin on the ball. And topspin does something specific to a ball moving through the air: because the top of the ball is spinning forward, it drags the air around it in a way that pulls the ball downward, on top of gravity already doing its job. The faster the ball spins, the harder it gets pulled down.
That's the whole trick behind the modern heavy-topspin forehand. It lets a player swing hard and aim well above the net with confidence, because the spin does the work of bringing the ball back down into the court — and once it lands, that same spin makes it kick up sharply off the bounce, which is exactly why heavy topspin balls are so uncomfortable to return.

Two Drills Worth Building into Every Practice
The catch-and-hold drill. On every forehand, finish by catching the throat of the racket with your non-hitting hand, up high over your opposite shoulder. It sounds like a small thing, but it does real work — it stops you from over-rotating and keeps your shoulders balanced all the way through the shot.
The rope drill. Tie a rope or string about four feet above the net, stretched across the middle of the court. Hit thirty heavy forehands from the baseline, and every single one has to clear the rope and land inside the baseline. You physically cannot do this without a real upward brushing motion — it forces the steep, high-spin swing path that the rest of this chapter has been describing, and there's no faking your way through it.
