Two-Handed Backhand Power, Hip Braking & Cruise Speed
I get asked this a lot: "Why does my two-hander feel weak and pushed, even when I swing hard?" And almost every time, the answer surprises people. It's not your arm strength. It's not your grip pressure. It's that you're using the wrong hand to hit the shot.
Here's the thing coaches have been getting backward for decades. We tell players to "pull through with the right arm" — meaning your dominant hand should be doing the work. But when researchers strapped sensors onto the handles of players like Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi, and Jannik Sinner, the data told a completely different story. The two-handed backhand isn't really a backhand at all. It's an aggressive, left-handed forehand — with your dominant hand along for the ride as a stabilizer.
Your Top Hand is the Engine, Not Your Bottom Hand
Think about it this way: your non-dominant hand, sitting on top of the grip, generates the overwhelming majority of the drive, the upward brush, and the forward acceleration — somewhere north of 70% of the total force in the stroke. Your dominant hand, down at the bottom, is really just holding things steady. It's an anchor and a directional guide, not the prime mover.
So if you're a right-handed player who can't seem to get any pop on your backhand, I can almost always tell you the diagnosis before I watch you hit a single ball: your left arm is asleep. The moment you start thinking of the stroke as a left-handed forehand — not a "backhand" your right arm is pulling through — your left pec, your left shoulder, and your left hip wake up and start firing together. That's when you start seeing effortless pace, the kind that clears the net with margin to spare instead of just muscling the ball and hoping.
How Your Hands Actually Pair Up on the Handle
The stability of the whole stroke comes down to how your two hands sit together on the grip, and they're doing very different jobs.
Your bottom hand — your dominant hand — sits in a Continental grip. Its job is to be an immovable pivot point, resisting the racket's urge to twist backward on contact. It doesn't drive the ball; it holds the fort.
Your top hand — your non-dominant hand — sits in an Eastern forehand grip, placed directly against your bottom hand with no gap between them. This is the hand doing the actual driving, palm facing the target as you swing through, and it's what generates your topspin and your horizontal drive through the ball.
If your two-hander keeps spraying wide or long, nine times out of ten it's because your hands have drifted apart on the handle. Check that the heel of your top hand is resting snugly against the thumb knuckle of your bottom hand — that little bit of proximity is what keeps the whole structure rigid.
Lifting Low Balls: the Shoulder Cartwheel
Watch Djokovic or Sinner deal with a ball that dips down around knee height, and you'll notice something — they never bend at the wrists or scoop with the elbows to lift it. Instead, they tilt their whole shoulder line, dropping the front shoulder down and lifting the back shoulder up, somewhere in the 35 to 45 degree range. As they uncoil, that back shoulder essentially vaults up and over the front one — like a cartwheel turned on its side.
This one adjustment does a lot of work. It lets you lift a low, dipping ball without collapsing your posture or scooping with your arms, and it's what produces that heavy topspin — around 2,800 RPM — with enough net clearance, often a full meter or more, that you can swing freely without fear of the net.
If you catch yourself bending at the waist to get under a low ball, that's your cue: drop the front shoulder into the slot and drive the back shoulder up and over it, rather than folding at the hips.
Why the Two-hander Wins the Sliding Fight
Here's where the two-handed backhand really separates itself from the one-hander — its ability to hit with real power even when you're stretched wide and sliding.
Picture Djokovic scrambling ten feet outside the doubles line into his backhand corner. He plants his outside foot at roughly a 45-degree angle and slides about a meter and a quarter, absorbing something like 3.2 times his own bodyweight through his quad and glute on the way down. That's a serious eccentric load to control, and it's exactly why footwork and leg strength matter as much as arm technique here.
Because both hands are on the racket, the frame also resists twisting far better than it would in a one-handed grip — around 45% more torsional stability — which is a big part of why he can strike the ball cleanly even mid-slide or airborne, without the racket face wobbling on him.
And because his hips stay square to the court through all of this, he doesn't need to spin around to get back into position. He just pushes off that sliding outside foot and he's back near the center of the baseline in well under half a second — under 450 milliseconds, if you want the number.
Sinner's Effortless 85 Mph Cruise
If you want to see the ceiling of what this stroke can do, watch Jannik Sinner. His two-handed backhand isn't just fast — it's the fastest, most consistent groundstroke on tour, cruising in rallies at 82 to 85 mph, and he does it without looking like he's straining at all.
Three things make that possible.
First, his grip pressure is remarkably light — think 2.5 out of 10 on a tension scale. That looseness lets the racket head drop naturally below the ball through gravity and inertia alone, rather than him having to manufacture racket-head speed by muscling it.
Second, his takeback is compact. His hands never travel back behind the plane of his spine — the whole load-up comes from a roughly 50-degree coil of the torso, not a big backswing with the arms.
Third, he meets the ball with a flat stringbed angle, around 85 degrees, which is what gives the shot its penetrating, flat-driving depth — the kind that pushes opponents ten feet behind the baseline and keeps them on their heels.

Two Drills to Build It
The left-hand-only forehand. Let go of the racket with your dominant hand entirely. Hold it only with your non-dominant hand, in an Eastern forehand grip. Rally from the baseline for ten minutes, aiming for real topspin and depth. This isn't a gimmick — it's how you wake up the motor pathways that make your left arm the primary engine instead of a passenger.
The slide-and-brake target. Set a cone in the deep corner, down the line. Sprint sideways, slide into an open stance on your outside foot, brake through that lead hip, and drive a two-hander down the line into the target. This trains the exact footwork and hip-braking pattern that lets you hit with pace even when you're stretched wide and off balance.
