PULSE - Impulse / Fa Jin

The 1-Inch Pulse.

The Principle

The pulse IS the release. Brake stops the body. Pulse releases the racket.

The Physics

Impulse = ∫ Force dt = Change in Momentum
  • Brake = sudden deceleration of proximal segments
  • Pulse = proximal-to-distal energy transfer
  • Contact = ~4ms dwell time
  • Peak force = 30ms after contact initiation

The Two Pulses

Stroke Action Distance Peak Force Timing
Forehand Push Palm pushes THROUGH 1 inch 30ms post-contact
Saber Backhand Edge slices THROUGH 3 inches 30ms post-contact

The Feeling

Stroke Cue
Forehand "Palm pushes one inch through the ball"
Backhand "Edge slices three inches through the ball"

Not a swing. A push. A slice. A pulse.

The Drills

1. Wall Pulse (Forehand)

  1. 1 inch from wall, racket butt touching
  2. No takeback — palm behind racket
  3. Push wall, feel spiral line fire
  4. Instant release
  5. 20 reps

2. Saber Pulse (Backhand)

  1. Edge leading, racket high behind
  2. Drop from gravity, lat pulls elbow down
  3. Edge snaps through
  4. Freeze at contact + 1 inch
  5. 20 reps

3. Regulation Drill

Partner calls: "20%, 50%, 100%" - 20%: Tiny pulse, soft brake - 50%: Medium pulse, firm brake - 100%: Violent pulse, violent brake - Same tiny takeback every time

The Cue

"Brake hard. Pulse one inch. The racket does the rest."
