Pre-Point Routine

15 Seconds. Every Point. No Exceptions.

The Principle

The routine IS the trigger. It tells your nervous system: "Chain mode. Automatic. Trust it."

No routine = conscious control = broken chain.

The 15-Second Protocol

Second Action Chain Variable
0-3 FEET - Step to position. Feel tripods. Screw feet. Arch lift. ROOT
3-5 HEAD - Chin tuck. Eyes level. Head still. V
5-7 HANDS - Grip 3/10. Racket throat supported. Wrist loose. P, F
7-10 BREATH - Slow inhale nose (4). Slow exhale mouth (6). T, V (calms vestibular)
10-12 EYES - Soft focus on opponent. See their hips/shoulders. Q (pre-park)
12-15 CUE - Say your word. "Park." "Push." "Saber." "Trust." All (trigger)

Total: 15 seconds. Every point.

The Routine by Situation

Serving

0-3s Feet to line. Platform/pinpoint set. Screw. Arch.
3-5s Chin tuck. Head still.
5-7s Grip check. Continental. 3/10. Toss hand ready.
7-10s Breath. 4 in, 6 out. Visualize toss contact zone.
10-12s Eyes on toss target. See ball leave hand.
12-15s "PARK." (or "Trust.")
Then: Toss β†’ Chain runs automatically.

Returning

0-3s Split step timing. Wide base. Tripods.
3-5s Chin over front shoulder. Head still.
5-7s Grip 3/10. Racket in front. Off-hand on throat.
7-10s Breath. 4 in, 6 out. See server's toss.
10-12s Eyes track server β†’ JUMP to YOUR contact zone at THEIR contact.
12-15s "PARK."
Then: React β†’ Chain runs.

Between Points (After Point Ends)

0-3s Walk to fence/back. Release tension. Shake hands.
3-5s Review: ONE fact only. "Late contact." "Good serve."
5-7s Reset: Feet tripod. Head neutral. Hands loose.
7-10s Breath. 4 in, 6 out. Clear mind.
10-12s Eyes soft on opponent.
12-15s Cue word. "Next."

The Cue Words (Pick ONE per Match)

Stroke Cue Options What It Triggers
Forehand "Push" "Arch-Oblique" "Park-Push" Chest fires, palm pushes, front leg brakes
Backhand Saber "Saber" "Lat-Draw" "Park-Draw" Lat pulls, edge leads, chest brakes side-on
Backhand Hybrid "Push-Guide" "Two Hands" "Park-Sync" Bottom pushes, top guides, arrive together
Serve "Trophy-Brake" "Load-Snap" "Park-Snap" Load trophy, brake front hip, snap pronation
Return "Jump-Park" "React" "Eyes-Hands" Eyes jump to zone, hands react
Volley "Catch-Pulse" "Block" "Step-Push" Step forward, firm face, 1-inch pulse
All "Trust" "Chain" "Process" "Auto" Full chain, no conscious control

Routine Quality Checklist

After each match, rate 1-10:

Element Did I do it EVERY point? Quality (1-10)
Feet (tripod, screw, arch) Y/N
Head (chin, still) Y/N
Hands (3/10, loose) Y/N
Breath (4-6, nose-mouth) Y/N
Eyes (soft β†’ park) Y/N
Cue word (spoken/internal) Y/N
Timing (15 sec) Y/N
Consistency (every point) Y/N

When Routine Breaks

Signal Immediate Fix
Rushing Next point: ADD 2 seconds to breath phase
Tight grip Next point: Conscious 2/10 for ready position
Head moving Next point: "Chin tuck" mantra during breath
No park Next point: Verbal "PARK" at opponent contact
Negative thought Next point: Breath + "Process. This shot."

Practice the Routine

Drill: "15-Second Clock"

  1. Set timer for 15 seconds
  2. Run full routine
  3. Stop exactly at beep
  4. Rate completeness
  5. 20 reps = routine wired

Drill: "Pressure Routine"

  • Play practice points
  • Loser does pushups
  • Only routine compliance scored (not point outcome)
  • Winner = best routine execution

Drill: "Eyes Closed Routine"

  • Run routine with eyes closed
  • Feel each phase internally
  • Opens proprioception, reduces visual dependence

The Routine Mantra

"Feet. Head. Hands. Breath. Eyes. Cue. Chain. Trust."
