Touch Shots: Slice, Drop Shot, Lob

Hua Jin Mastery β€” Absorb & Redirect with Finesse.

Touch Philosophy

Touch isn't "soft hands." It's precise face control at low speed. The same CORE chain applies β€” just smaller 8, softer brake, gentler pulse.

The Touch CORE Map

Variable Touch Implementation
Q Eyes park at contact zone. Track ball longer on slow shots.
V Head still. No peeking at target.
ROOT Light feet. HΖ° (empty) ready to become Thα»±c (full).
8 Tiny 8. Grapefruit-sized. Continuous, no pause.
45Β° Face angle IS the shot. Open for slice/lob, neutral for drop.
BRAKE Gentle brake. Torso slows, doesn't stop hard.
PULSE Feather pulse. 1-inch guide, not push.
JIN Hua dominant. Absorb pace, redirect with precision. Ting feels face.

Slice (Backhand & Forehand)

The Principle

Cut under the ball. Face open. Path high-to-low. Racket stays on 45Β° glass.

Backhand Slice (Saber Family)

  • Grip: Continental, slight eastern backhand
  • Load: High takeback, edge leading, non-dominant hand pulls
  • Park: Eyes to contact zone (higher, further side)
  • Execute: Chest stays side-on. Lat pulls elbow down. Edge leads. Face opens through contact.
  • Brake: Chest brakes side-on. Front foot roots.
  • Pulse: Edge guides down-through. 1-inch pulse.
  • Finish: High, elbow up, chest still side-on.

Forehand Slice (Push Family)

  • Grip: Continental / slight eastern forehand
  • Load: Racket up, face open, chest coiled
  • Execute: Chest fires, palm guides under ball. Face stays open.
  • Brake: Front leg brakes gently.
  • Pulse: Palm guides under 1 inch.

Fault Signals β€” Slice

Symptom Cause Fix
Floats long Face too open / no brake Close face 5Β°, brake torso
Into net Contact late / face closed Meet earlier, hold face open
No bite Wrist floppy / no edge lead Firm wrist, edge leads
Pops up Tried to "hit" not guide Softer brake, guide pulse

Drop Shot

The Principle

Disguise = same setup as drive. Tiny 8. Face open ~30Β°. Feather pulse. Ball dies at net.

The Disguise

  • Identical ready, load, park as your drive
  • Only difference: 8 size (tiny), brake (gentle), pulse (feather)
  • Contact point: Slightly further out front than drive

Execution

Phase Detail
Load Same coil as drive. Opponent reads "drive."
Park Same. Eyes locked.
8 Grapefruit-sized. Continuous.
Face Opens to ~30Β° at last instant (wrist lays back slightly).
Brake Torso slows gently. No stomp.
Pulse Feather β€” fingers guide, don't push.
Spin Backspin + sidespin = dies + curves away.

The Rule

If you can hit a winner, don't drop shot. Drop shot is for when they're back and you're in.

Fault Signals β€” Drop Shot

Symptom Cause Fix
Pops up Face not open enough / pulse too firm Open face 30Β°, feather fingers
Into net Contact too low / late Meet further front, higher
No disguise Takeback different from drive Identical load & park
Too short Too much backspin, no forward Tiny forward pulse component

Lob

The Principle

Offensive lob = drive mechanics + open face + upward 45Β° path. Defensive lob = survival β€” just get it deep.

Offensive Lob (Attack)

  • When: Opponent at net, you have time
  • Load: Same as drive
  • Face: Opens to 45Β° at contact
  • Path: 45Β° glass β€” low to high
  • Pulse: Firm 1-inch push UP through
  • Target: Deep to baseline, over backhand side

Defensive Lob (Survival)

  • When: Stretched wide, on run, late
  • Face: Open 60-70Β°
  • Path: High arc
  • Pulse: Minimal β€” just get it up
  • Target: Deep, middle, buy time

Fault Signals β€” Lob

Symptom Cause Fix
Short (smashed) Not enough height/depth Open face more, push up harder
Long Face too open / too much pulse Close face 10Β°, softer pulse
No time Recognized late Read opponent position earlier

Checklists

Slice

  • Grip: continental
  • Load: high, edge leading (BH) / face open (FH)
  • Park: eyes to zone
  • Execute: edge leads (BH) / palm guides under (FH)
  • Brake: chest side-on (BH) / front leg (FH)
  • Pulse: 1-inch edge/palm guide
  • Finish: high, controlled

Drop Shot

  • Disguise: identical drive setup
  • 8: tiny, continuous
  • Face: opens to 30Β° at last instant
  • Brake: gentle torso slow
  • Pulse: feather fingers
  • Target: just over net, dies

Lob

  • Type chosen: offensive vs defensive
  • Face: 45Β° (offensive) / 60-70Β° (defensive)
  • Path: 45Β° glass up (offensive) / high arc (defensive)
  • Pulse: firm up (offensive) / minimal (defensive)
  • Target: deep baseline / deep middle
