The Three Models: Discovering Your Own Forehand Through Constraint-Led Exploration¶
Stop asking which pro you should copy. That's the wrong question, and it's been sending you down the wrong road.
The better question is this: which constraints reveal what your own body naturally wants to do, and what do you call the thing it discovers? The three pro forehand models covered here — Nadal-Alcaraz, Federer-Medvedev, Djokovic-Hurkacz — aren't targets to imitate. They're starting points, three corners of a much bigger space, and somewhere in that space is a forehand that's actually yours.
The Three Axes Every Forehand Lives On¶
Any forehand, from any player at any level, can be described along three independent variables. The three pro models simply sit at different points along these same three axes — and so does yours, whether you've mapped it yet or not.
Grip rotation, from Eastern to Western. Eastern keeps the racket face close to vertical at contact — low spin, high control, a flatter trajectory. Semi-Western closes the face roughly 45 degrees at contact — moderate spin, moderate pace, and by far the most common grip among modern players. Full Western closes it further still, around 70 degrees — extreme spin, slower pace, a very high arc.
Contact height, from low to high. Low, around waist height, is easier to control but generates less power — common among baseline grinders. Mid, around chest height, is the compromise zone where most recreational forehands actually live. High, at shoulder height or above, generates maximum power through upward acceleration — common among aggressive baseliners.
Lever, straight arm versus compact. A long lever means the arm stays extended through contact — maximum reach, more spin potential, but more stress on the elbow. A compact lever means the arm stays bent at contact — less reach, less stress, more controlled pace.
Picture this as a three-dimensional space with eight corner solutions — two extremes across three axes. The three pro models each occupy one of those corners. Your forehand lives in one of the other five, or somewhere on the boundary between two. The goal of everything that follows is finding out which.
Model A — The Whip (Nadal-Alcaraz)¶
The signature: extreme shoulder rotation, a semi-Western to full-Western grip, the racket head dropping low below the ball before brushing sharply up the back of it at a high contact point, an extremely open stance, and a huge follow-through sweeping across the body.
What it produces: heavy topspin — somewhere in the 3,000-5,000 RPM range — a high ball arc, deep landing in the opponent's court, and a generous margin for error thanks to that high net clearance.
What it demands of your body: high shoulder mobility, particularly extreme external rotation; real hip flexibility for a deep hip turn; strong forearm and wrist endurance, since the brushing action is grip-intensive; and a strong, well-coiled core.
The tell, if you're watching video: the racket head drops noticeably below the wrist at the bottom of the takeback. That drop is deliberate — it's storing energy in the stretch-shortening cycle, the same principle behind winding up before a throw.
How to test whether your body is drawn to it: tape a string about 15 centimeters above the net, and hit forehands clearing it — no technique instruction, just watch what your body does on its own. If it easily brushes up into a high arc to clear that string without you forcing anything, your body is naturally biased toward Model A. If that feels like a fight, your body's telling you it lives elsewhere.
Model B — The Extension (Federer-Medvedev)¶
The signature: a long arm extension through contact, an Eastern to slight semi-Western grip, the racket staying high — above the ball — through contact rather than brushing upward, a flatter trajectory, and a full follow-through pointed straight at the target.
What it produces: lower spin, around 2,000-2,800 RPM, a flatter trajectory, deep controlled pace, and what a lot of players describe as a "laser" feel off the strings.
What it demands: naturally long arms, or genuinely good extension through the shoulder; strong shoulder stability so there's no wobble in that extended position; and comparatively lighter lower-body engagement, since this model relies more on upper-body mechanics than the other two.
The tell on video: the racket head stays above the wrist throughout the swing, and the follow-through finishes pointed at the target rather than sweeping across the body.
How to test it: mark out a one-foot square target about three feet inside the baseline, and hit forehands into it — again, no technique coaching, just observe. If your body easily generates flat, driving balls that land deep in that square without much conscious effort, you're biased toward Model B.
Model C — The Compact Unit (Djokovic-Hurkacz)¶
The signature: a compact unit turn, a slight wrist flex at contact, the racket staying close to the body, a more vertical swing path, and spin and pace generated through geometry and timing rather than sheer length of swing — the whole thing built around extreme precision and consistency.
What it produces: moderate spin, roughly 2,500-3,500 RPM, moderate pace, exceptional accuracy, a low unforced error rate, and the ability to hit essentially any target on demand.
What it demands: excellent timing and rhythm, fast eyes that read the ball early, comparatively less shoulder flexibility, and lower-body engagement that's actually the primary power source here — more leg drive, less reliance on upper-body length.
The tell on video: the racket stays close to the body all the way through contact, the follow-through is moderate — not swept dramatically across, not fully extended — and the legs are visibly doing most of the real work.
How to test it: place five cones at random spots around the court and hit forehands to each one on call, no technique instruction. If your body redirects easily with a compact swing to each cone without you having to think your way through it, you're biased toward Model C.
The Five-Constraint Test: Finding Your Own Bias¶
Run through five constraints, one per session, and rate each one honestly afterward.
- A high net — string taped 15cm above the net. Favors Model A.
- A deep target — a one-meter square, three meters inside the baseline. Favors Model B.
- Five random targets, called out live. Favors Model C.
- A heavy-topspin target — a high-arc ball landing within a meter of the baseline. Favors Model A.
- A driving target — deep and flat, toward the back fence. Favors Model B.
After each session, rate it 1-10 on a single question: how natural did this feel in my body? Not how well you executed it — how natural it felt. A high score means your body is genuinely biased toward that model; a low score means it's resisting.
Once you've run all five, the pattern usually sorts itself out cleanly. Your highest score points to your primary model — your body's natural affinity. Your second-highest points to a secondary model, which often complements the primary one nicely: Model A plus B tends to produce a whip-and-drive hybrid, B plus C a drive-and-control hybrid, A plus C a whip-and-control hybrid. Whichever model scored lowest is generally one worth avoiding — your body is actively resisting it, and fighting that resistance rarely pays off.
The 14-Day Combiner Protocol¶
Here's the thing worth knowing upfront: most real forehands at a high level aren't pure Model A, B, or C. They're combinations — a dominant trait from the primary model, complemented by a specific feature borrowed from the secondary one.
Days 1-4 — primary model only. Hit forehands strictly in your primary model's signature style. Restrict yourself deliberately. Pay attention to what your body does automatically without effort, versus what still requires conscious work.
Days 5-8 — extract one feature from your secondary model. Pick exactly one specific trait — if Model B is your secondary, maybe it's the contact height; if Model C, maybe it's the compactness of the unit turn — and drill just that one feature, fifty reps a day, nothing else added.
Days 9-14 — integration. Combine your primary model with that one secondary feature in realistic match-simulation scenarios. Thirty forehands per scenario, paying close attention to how the combination actually feels as a whole.
The test on day 14: hit twenty forehands under random conditions. If the combination feels more natural than either model would on its own, you've found your actual combination — not borrowed from anyone, built from what your own body does best.
Naming Your Model¶
This step might sound unnecessary, but it isn't. Once something has a name, it becomes real — you can refer to it, defend it, explain it to a coach or a hitting partner, and design drills specifically around it. An unnamed model just floats. It exists, technically, but it's much harder to actually cultivate something you haven't named.
A few ways to approach the naming:
- Just your name. "Henry's forehand." Simple, direct, no pretense.
- A descriptive metaphor that captures the dominant trait — something like "the coiled-whip forehand" or "the deep-drive forehand."
- A blend of the pro names that shaped it — "Nadal-Djokovic hybrid," which communicates the lineage honestly.
- A personal cue word drawn from your own imagery — whatever genuinely resonates for you.
Here's a simple test once you've picked one: say the name out loud before a match. If it feels true, keep it. If it feels borrowed or a little pretentious, rename it — there's no wrong answer here except one that doesn't feel like yours.
Write the name down along with a short paragraph describing it: what it is, what it does, what it feels like, and why it's genuinely yours. Keep that on the first page of your training journal.
The Core Idea to Take With You¶
A player who's found their own model doesn't ask "which pro should I copy" anymore. They ask which constraint reveals their body most clearly, and what name fits what that body does. The three pro models were never the destination — they were reference points for finding whatever unique model your own body actually wants to express. By the end of this process, your forehand has a name. Not Nadal's. Not Federer's. Not Djokovic's. Yours.
