Footwork Drills — The Dynamic Foundation¶
Five drills built around Footwork Stances — training the body to manage its center of mass instead of just running, using the GSM (Gravitational Boost) and DSI (Dynamic Stability Index) engines directly.
Drill 1: Sinking Split-Step¶
Goal: optimize $S_{gravity}$.
How: hop lightly. As you land, sink the hips 5-10cm lower than usual, then accelerate sideways immediately.
Feel: the ground should feel like it's "pushing" you into the first step, not the other way around.
Drill 2: Axis-Preservation Slide¶
Goal: hold $DSI \geq 0.85$ through a slide.
How: balance a tennis ball on top of your head. Slide side to side to retrieve balls. If the ball falls off, your tilt angle $\Delta\theta$ went too far and your DSI collapsed.
Drill 3: V-Step Transition¶
Goal: optimize the interception point.
How: from center court, step 45 degrees forward, make contact, then cross back to recover. Repeat 20 times per side.
Drill 4: Distributed Braking¶
Goal: avoid a single hard brake.
How: sprint back toward the baseline. Before you arrive, lower your center of gravity and take several small decelerating steps rather than one big stopping stride. A single hard brake kills your ability to move again immediately; distributed braking doesn't.
Drill 5: Elastic Movement (Rubber Band)¶
Goal: train tensegrity through the whole chain.
How: treat the legs and upper body as a single connected unit, like a stretched rubber band. Feel the centrifugal force link continuously from feet, through hips, to shoulders — never as separate, disconnected pieces.
