Foundations & Grip: The Interface of Energy¶
I get asked about grip more than almost anything else, and here's the thing I want you to understand first: a grip is not just how you hold the handle. It's how you connect your kinetic chain to the ball. At 50+, your priority isn't raw power anymore — it's structural integrity. Get the interface right, and everything downstream gets easier.
The Grip Philosophy¶
Your grip is the first signal your brain gets about whether it's safe to move freely. Squeeze the handle too hard, and your brain reads that as danger — tightness — and it responds by restricting movement to protect the joint. That's not you being weak or overthinking it; that's just how the nervous system works. Hold the racket in a way that stays adaptive instead, and your nervous system stays fluid enough to let the "whip" effect actually happen.
A grip is an interface, not a handle. Think of pressure on a 1-10 scale: you want to be sitting around 3/10 through most of the swing, and only spike up to 9/10 right at impact. Everything in between is where the racket does its own work — let it.
And the bevels aren't trivia. They're the tool you actually use to define your shots.
The three master grips you'll actually use:
Continental, on bevel 2, is your universal grip — it's what you reach for on the volley, the slice, and the serve, and it's the most neutral interface you have.
Eastern or Semi-Western, on bevel 3-4, is the forehand standard for a 3.5 player. It gives you a stable face at contact, which is exactly what you want when you're grooving a consistent stroke.
Western, on bevel 5 and up, buys you extreme spin — but it asks a lot of your body to get there. If you're playing at 50+, be honest with yourself about what that demand does to your wrists over time. It's often not worth the risk.
Structural Integrity¶
Here's where a lot of chronic soreness actually starts. The "tensegrity" of your forearm — how well it holds together under load — depends entirely on how your knuckles and heel pad line up with the racket's bevels. Get that alignment wrong, and your small wrist muscles start compensating for it, swing after swing, match after match. That compensation is exactly what turns into chronic strain.
So check it: place your heel pad — the base of your thumb — right on the bevel, and feel the weight settle into your base knuckles, not into your fingertips. And drop the death grip. Your elbow will thank you. A racket held too tightly doesn't hit harder; it just transmits more shock straight into your joints.
The Contact Point Architecture¶
Your grip doesn't just change how the ball feels off the strings — it moves your ideal contact point entirely. This is where a lot of players get into trouble: they pick a grip, then swing like they're still using their old one.
If you're playing Eastern or Semi-Western, your contact point sits in front of you and slightly to the side. If you're in Continental, contact comes out further in front, which is what actually allows the open-face carving motion behind a good slice or volley.
Here's the trap: if you're gripping Western but making contact like an Eastern player — too early, too close to your body — you're going to shank it. The grip and the contact point have to match. One doesn't work without the other.
Practice Drills & Mental Cues¶
The "Check-Bevel" Drill. Before every point, glance down at your grip. Make sure your knuckle is actually sitting on the bevel it's supposed to be on. Thirty seconds of this habit will save you from a lot of mid-match grip drift.
The "Soft-Hand" Drill. Hold the racket with just your thumb and index finger — nothing else — and swing gently. You can't muscle this one. It forces you to actually feel the weight of the racket doing the work, instead of squeezing it into submission.

One more diagnostic tool, and it's one of the most useful ones I know: listen to the sound of your contact. A solid strike sounds like "Bộp" — clean, compact, done. A lazy, over-squeezed block sounds like "Bịch" — dull, heavy, late. Use that sound to calibrate your grip tension in real time. Your ears will catch what your hands can't feel.
