Science Lab¶
The anatomy and biomechanics underneath every stroke — independent of playing level.
Why This Section Is Different¶
Every other section on this site is organized by playing level — Foundation, Advanced, Elite — because a 3.5 player and a 4.5 player need different things from the same topic. The Science Lab breaks that rule on purpose. A shoulder is a shoulder whether you're picking up a racket for the first time or you've been playing for thirty years. The joint angles that keep your elbow healthy at 45 don't change because your topspin got better. So instead of levels, this section is organized by body region and by biomechanical concept, and it's meant to be read alongside whatever level section you're actually working through.
I built this section because I kept hitting the same wall in the level-based material: an article would tell me "rotate your hips 40 degrees" without ever explaining why 40 degrees, why not 30, why not 60, and what happens to my body if I get it wrong. The strokes sections describe what to do. The Science Lab describes what's actually happening inside the joint when you do it — the geometry, the muscle recruitment order, the tissue that's absorbing the load, and the difference between how a 25-year-old body and a 55-year-old body handle the same motion.
What's in This Section¶
The Anatomy Lab and the Angle Atlas approach the same underlying question — what does the body actually do during a tennis stroke — from two different directions. The Anatomy Lab moves region by region: shoulders, arms, trunk, hips, knees, ankles, and the nervous system that coordinates all of it. The Angle Atlas moves concept by concept: the specific joint angles that show up at contact, why joints behave like springs, the neurological wiring underneath control, and how connective tissue and skeletal architecture set the limits on what's possible.
Read them in either order. If you came here because a specific joint hurts or a specific level article told you to check your shoulder mechanics, start with the Anatomy Lab and go straight to that region. If you came here because you want to understand the underlying physics — why angles matter more than effort, why a joint can act like a spring — start with the Angle Atlas.
