Slice Backhand — Quick Reference¶
Your tennis bag companion for the 50+ game.
The fundamentals, in one breath: Continental grip, V on bevel #2. Face open like a hood, 30-45°. Path high to low (or flat to forward on low balls). Sound: "fwoosh" for a clean underspin hit. Grip tension: 3-4 out of 10 — soft hand, firm contact.
The Four Situations¶
Low ball — scoop and slide. Chest down to the ball, and whatever you do, don't bend your back to get there.
Return of serve — block and redirect. No swing. Use their pace, not yours.
Approach — slice low, advance. Cut it deep, split-step, and move forward behind it.
Defense — just get it deep. Buy time. Don't go hunting for the lines.
The 50+ Safety Checklist¶
Protect your back — bend the knees for every low ball, never the spine. Protect your shoulder — if it's feeling tight, lean on the two-hander for power and save the slice for everything else. Control the lunge — small, controlled steps beat a sudden lunge every time; a hard stop is what strains the knee. And keep the grip soft — tension is where injury lives, so relax the hand and let it absorb the ball's pace instead of fighting it.
The slice is your insurance policy. When in doubt, slice it deep and breathe.
