Reflex Wall (Volley) — Closing Out the Point at Net

The volley is blocking, not hitting. You borrow the incoming pace and redirect it - you don't add your own swing on top of it. This is the same non-swing philosophy covered in Volley Technique - Loose Grip, described here through a structural-stiffness lens.

The "No Swing" Philosophy

Think of the racket face as a stone wall. Your only job is to place it at the right position and the right angle, and let the ball bounce off in the direction you want.

Two Kinds of Volley

Type $K_{wrist}$ Result

The Geometry in Space

The V-Step

Step at a 45-degree angle toward the ball. This intercepts it earlier, narrows the opponent's passing angles, and opens up a wider angle for your own reply.

The Reflection Angle

$$Reflection\ angle = 180° - (Incoming\ ball\ angle + Racket\ face\ angle)$$

A five-to-ten-degree adjustment in racket face angle is enough to redirect a shot from dead center to a sharp angle down the line.

The Short Lever Arm

$$\tau_{recoil} = F_{ball} \times L_{arm}$$

Shortening $L_{arm}$ reduces the recoil torque that would otherwise twist back into the shoulder, which is what keeps the racket face stable on contact.

Fascial Locking

At the instant of contact, the fascia running from chest to shoulder to wrist needs to be tensioned in sync - "stiffness in motion," not a rigid, gripped arm.

Avoiding the Over-Swing

The racket should never travel back past the plane of the shoulders. Every bit of motion is directed forward, toward the ball.
