Tensegrity and the Cradle

Definition

Tensegrity borrows from Buckminster Fuller's engineering concept: a structure holds itself together through balanced pull, not compression. Applied to your body, the rule is to always keep tension between adjacent joints — hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist, racquet — as one connected chain.

Applying It to the Volley

On the forehand volley and the backhand volley, the loaded position means pressing on the racquet handle and moving it up toward the right side of the body. On the backhand volley specifically, the right shoulder moves inward, the elbow moves outward, and both shoulders draw inward together. This whole shape is the "cradle" — literally, cradling and rocking the racquet.

The key principle: on a volley, you only need to pull back slightly and you already have all the impulse you need. There's no need for a big backswing.

The Payoff

This gives you effortless power without a real swing. Pre-tension throughout the body means rotation releases the energy automatically. And the racquet face stays stable because the whole upper body moves as one rigid unit.

Compare this to old-school "punch" volleys, which tire you out and are less stable. In high-level doubles, the racquet face stays stable precisely because the upper body is tensed as a single piece rather than swinging independently.
