The Return of Serve Slice — Safety First

A big serve at this level is really about pace and spin doing one job: disrupting your rhythm. Try to swing back hard with topspin against it and you'll mostly find errors, not winners. The slice return is your redirection tool instead. And here's the honest truth at 50+: you don't need to be a hero on this shot. A deep, slow-paced slice landing in the middle of the service box beats a "winner attempt" into the net ten times out of ten.

The Technique: Block and Redirect

Start with the split-step, and treat it as non-negotiable. You split-step the instant your opponent contacts the ball. Skip it, and you're late before you've even started.

Then comes the block itself. Don't swing. The server has already given you all the pace you need — your job is simply to block the ball, keeping the racket short, compact, and steady.

And the bevel shift: stay in your Continental grip, and as the ball comes in, just angle the racket face to direct it deep into your opponent's court. Think of the whole thing as a volley you happen to be hitting on the return.

Where to Aim

Deep middle is your safest option — it removes the opponent's angle entirely. Aiming at the server's feet works well if they're following the serve in behind it. And going wide to the backhand opens up the court for whatever you want to hit next.

The Drill: Return-Wall Practice

Stand six meters from a wall. Throw the ball against it hard, then slice-block it back as it rebounds toward you. Focus on quiet hands, a firm wrist, and absorbing the pace rather than fighting it. Goal: ten returns landing deep, near the baseline mark on the wall.

THE BIG IDEA: Redirect, don't create.

  1. SPLIT-STEP:
     - Timing is everything. Hop as they hit.

  2. THE BLOCK:
     - NO SWING. Use their pace. Compact movement.

  3. THE GRIP:
     - Continental. Face open.

  4. THE TARGET:
     - Deep middle is your best friend.

  5. 50+ WARNING:
     - Don't over-reach. If it's too wide, just chip it back.
