Miomir Kecmanovic — Forehand Model (Reference)¶

Why This Reference¶
It's a near-perfect illustration of the modern open stance under time pressure — specifically, the defensive posture needed when a ball arrives fast on the forehand side and there's no time to set up a neutral or closed stance.
What to Notice¶
Both knees bend deep — neither one is ever locked straight. The outside leg (right leg, for a right-hander) carries the load, with the thigh loaded like a spring. The hips sit noticeably lower than a typical recreational stance — roughly 15–20 cm lower in the comparison footage. The back stays straight and the chest stays open rather than collapsing forward. The off-hand rises for balance, and the torso is already pre-rotated, ready to fire. On clay, this posture also has to account for sliding — sitting low is partly a slide-control requirement, not just a power one.
Compared to My Own Open Stance (Surrey, Hard Court)¶
Same open-stance forehand shape, same underlying intent — but the height differs. My hips stay higher; I haven't sat down into the shot the way Kecmanovic does. His stance is visibly lower and more loaded.
Three Things to Try¶
Drop one notch. When setting up, think "sit into a chair" for about 5 cm of extra depth — not by hunching the back, by bending the knees.
Keep the off-hand up. Hold the left arm raised, the way Kecmanovic does, all the way until the racket makes contact — it isn't just for show, it's what keeps the shoulders pre-rotated and ready.
Count "1-2." One is bending the knees to build tension; two is driving off the back leg. Don't try to do both at the same time — the sequence matters as much as the depth.
