Slice Quick Reference: Your Tennis Bag Companion

Keep this one in your bag. The fundamentals never change: Continental grip, V on bevel #2. Face open like a hood, 30-45°. Path runs high to low, or flat to forward on low balls. Listen for the "fwoosh" of clean underspin. Grip pressure stays at 3-4 out of 10 — soft hand, firm contact.

Four situations, four go-to moves. On a low ball, scoop and slide — chest down to the ball, and whatever you do, don't bend from the back. On a return, block and redirect — no swing at all, just use their pace. On an approach, slice low and advance — cut it deep, split-step, and move forward. On defense, just get it deep — buying time matters more than hitting the lines.

A short safety checklist past 50. Protect your back by always bending the knees on low balls, never the spine. Protect your shoulder — if it's feeling tight, lean on the two-hander for power and let the slice handle everything else. Control the lunge with small, deliberate steps rather than sudden lunges that strain the knees. And keep the grip soft; tension is what turns a routine ball into an injury, so relax the hand and let it absorb the pace instead of fighting it.

The slice is your insurance policy. When in doubt, slice it deep and breathe.
