15-Minute Shadow-Swing Routine (Pre-Compensation)¶
A longer companion to the 5-Minute Shadow Drill Routine, built entirely around Pre-Compensation — setting the racket face early instead of adjusting it at the last instant before contact.
1. Mirror Palm-Up (5 minutes)¶
Stand in front of a mirror with no ball. Take the backswing, freeze, and check the palm.
- Forehand: the palm should face the sky.
- Backhand: the racket face should be visible, "watch-facing."
Repeat 20 times per side.
Cues: "forehand = see your palm." "Backhand = see your watch."
2. Compact Wrist Flip (3 minutes)¶
Practice the thumb-top-to-thumb-bottom flip in slow motion, 20 reps. This is the return-of-serve prep move — it needs to become fast and automatic for when there's no time to think.
Feel: rotating the wrist from an open-hand to a closed-hand position.
3. Big Loop, Stable Wrist (3 minutes)¶
Shadow swing while keeping the racket face pointed at the side fence through the entire loop. If the face wobbles, the wrist is doing work that the shoulder should be doing instead. Repeat 20 times.
Cue: "the shoulder does the work, the wrist stays quiet."
4. Slow 50% Rally (4 minutes)¶
Rally at 50% pace. Focus on:
- Grip pressure at 3/10
- Ulnar deviation on the takeback
- A genuinely loose wrist
- Contact 45 degrees in front of the body
Check: if the forearm burns after 10 balls, you're steering the racket with the hand. If the shoulder and core feel the work while the hand stays quiet, that's correct.
