The Low Ball Slice — Scoop and Slide¶
A ball that lands below the net cord is the number one shot-killer for players at this level. The instinct is to lift it with topspin, and that instinct is exactly what produces the shank or the netted ball. Here's the honest rule at 50+: don't fight the low ball. If it's below your knees, your hips simply can't generate enough upward force to topspin it safely. The slice is your emergency exit — use it to scoop the ball and keep it alive.
The Technique: Scoop and Slide¶
Start with the knee lunge. You need to get your chest down to the ball's level, and that means bending the knees deeply — not bending at the back. Bend at the back instead and you lose stability along with a fair bit of safety.
Then comes the scoop itself. Forget the usual high-to-low slice swing here — that path would just drive the racket into the ground. Instead, use a flat-to-forward path, with the racket head moving under the ball like a scoop sliding beneath it.
And finally, the slide: as you make contact, imagine sliding the racket face right under the ball. Keep that face slightly open — the hood position — which is what gives you the underspin you need for stability on a shot this low.
The Drill: The Low-Wall Rally¶
Stand three meters from a wall. Drop the ball low and slice it against the wall, aiming for the bottom quarter. Focus on feeling the scoop under the ball, not the swing. Goal: ten consecutive clean slices hitting that bottom quarter.
Here's why this one's worth doing at 50+: the wall never misses, never moves, and the feedback is instant — you see and hear immediately whether the ball's landing where it should. And just as importantly, you're not bending under a moving ball while someone half your age smashes it back at you.

LOW BALL SLICE — CHEAT SHEET
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
THE BIG IDEA: Don't fight the low ball, scoop it.
1. KNEE DEPTH:
- Chest must be at ball height.
- Bend knees, keep the back straight (save the back).
2. THE PATH:
- Flat-to-forward (not high-to-low here).
3. THE FACE:
- Open like a hood (30-45°).
4. THE SOUND:
- "Fwoosh" (clean underspin). "Thwack" (ground) means
you're too low.
5. 50+ WARNING:
- Don't lunge hard. Use a controlled step and a bridge leg.
