DL Drills — Direct Load Return¶
Four drills for training the DL (Direct Load) Return engine — cutting the backswing out of the equation entirely and loading the body directly off the incoming ball.
Drill 1: Wall-Compression¶
Goal: eliminate the backswing.
How: stand close to a wall. Have a partner throw the ball hard against it. Split-step and block the rebound as it comes back at you. The racket must never travel back past the shoulder.
Drill 2: Gravity-Step Sprint¶
Goal: optimize $J_{load}$, the loading impulse borrowed from the split-step's drop.
How: split-step, feel your center of mass "fall" as low as it can go, then accelerate sideways for 2 meters. This is the same gravitational-drop mechanism covered in GSM — you're borrowing the fall instead of pushing with muscle.
Drill 3: High-Impact Locking¶
Goal: hold $K_{wrist} \geq 0.95$.
How: face a ball machine firing at 120 km/h or faster. Focus entirely on keeping the racket face still on contact — don't let the wrist shake or twist.
Drill 4: DL Shadow (No Ball)¶
Goal: internalize the split-step and torso-compression pattern without a ball to react to.
How:
- Stand in the ready position.
- Split-step low.
- Rotate the shoulders 30-45 degrees and load the hips.
- Take a short swing — no backswing at all.
