The Forehand: Anatomy of the Power Position

This chapter is about what Sinner's forehand does for his game and how to think about learning from it. Why This Shot Gets Studied So Much

Sinner's forehand sits in a strange category: odd-looking but devastating. It doesn't have the elegance of Federer's, the extreme topspin of Nadal's, or the big loop of Alcaraz's — yet the numbers say it's one of the most dangerous shots on tour: average speed of 79 mph, a 19.4% winner rate, and only an 11.3% unforced-error rate.

The question that keeps analysts busy is simple: how does he generate that much racquet-head speed from such a small swing? The answer is the "horizontal power position" — a setup that frame-by-frame analysis by James Ludlow of OTI helped clarify in 2024.

Setting Up: 0 to 0.18 Seconds

Video analysis from the Mouratoglou Academy (30fps) shows Sinner's preparation phase runs 0 to 0.18 seconds after he reads the direction off his opponent's racquet. Three things happen at once in that window: a split step where both feet land together to create an active base; a shoulder turn of 85–90°, with the left arm extending toward the ball; and the racquet setting into the horizontal power position, head pointing right.

His takeback is extremely short — the racquet doesn't loop out wide the way it does for many players. It's a compact, direct path from neutral to the horizontal power position. That's pure Piatti DNA: strip out every unnecessary movement.

The left arm plays a specific role here — it extends toward the ball, fingertip aimed at the predicted contact point. Piatti taught him to use the off-hand as a "living rangefinder," a tool that builds rotational axis and readies reflexes.

The Coiling Phase: 0.18 to 0.26 Seconds

This is the least-discussed but most important phase. In the horizontal power position, the racquet appears to pause — not truly stopping, but transitioning from backswing to forward swing. Over roughly 0.08 seconds, the external oblique stretches 12–14%, the coiling mechanism of the upper body. The wrist sits neutral — neither flexed nor extended — setting up the next phase.

The key detail: the racquet head starts "falling" backward here purely from gravity and momentum. This is what analysts call the racquet flipping into lag without Sinner actively manipulating his wrist. It's an energy-efficient, lower-injury-risk mechanism precisely because it isn't muscled.

Shoulder-hip separation at the power point measures 52° — well above the tour average of 44°, a direct legacy of the rotational ability his skiing background built.

The Release: Where the Whip Comes From

The release phase (0.26–0.34 seconds) is where the energy stored in the first two phases fires. The kinetic chain fires in sequence: legs push, hips rotate, shoulders rotate, arm extends, wrist pronates, racquet head accelerates. The hip opens 0.02 seconds before the shoulder — a tiny gap that's enough to create the whip effect. Wrist pronation happens extremely late, in the final 0.03 seconds before contact, which is the real trick behind generating huge head speed from a small swing: the lever arm from elbow to racquet head is longest exactly when the arm is fully extended.

Where He Actually Meets the Ball

Hawk-Eye data shows Sinner makes contact an average of 0.6m in front of his hip — 0.15m earlier than the ATP average. That's not a minor technical detail; it's the foundation of a whole tactical pressure system. Hitting early lets him return the ball 0.05–0.1 seconds sooner than a later contact point would — enough, at tour speed, to turn a defensive shot into an offensive one. It also lets him strike the ball on the rise rather than at the peak or on the way down, and it keeps him closer to the baseline, shrinking the space an opponent can exploit.

His ball crosses the net at an average height of 78cm — 2cm lower than tour average — and combined with 135–145 km/h pace, it drives through the court rather than floating up, forcing opponents to play the ball low and awkward.

Why the Follow-Through Stops Short

Where most ATP players wrap the racquet over the shoulder in a big finish, Sinner ends with the racquet almost level with his chest — compact and low. The reason is recovery efficiency: a long, high finish costs an extra 0.08–0.12 seconds to bring the racquet back to ready position. Sinner's short finish means he's ready for the next shot faster, which fits perfectly with his early-hitting, high-tempo rally style. Crucially, the short finish doesn't mean he's "blocking" the ball — pronation and extension are complete before contact; the finish is just what happens after the ball has already left the strings.

Sinner vs. Alcaraz: Two Philosophies, Same Grip

Both use a semi-western grip, but the outcome diverges completely. Alcaraz builds his forehand on a big loop, long arm extension, and early lag — heavy topspin above 3,000 RPM, a ball that kicks up hard off the bounce. Sinner builds his on the horizontal power position, a small swing, and late lag — flatter pace around 2,100 RPM, a ball that stays low and drives through the court. Alcaraz trades speed for spin; Sinner trades spin for speed and time. Both are correct, tuned for different conditions: Sinner's version suits fast hard courts and indoor play; Alcaraz's heavy topspin is more universally adjustable, particularly useful for controlling bounce height on clay.

Why This Fits His Whole Tactical System

Sinner's forehand isn't built to look pretty — it's a tool engineered for one specific pattern: serve wide, then forehand +1 into the space that opens up. That pattern demands hitting early on the rise, needing no big backswing because the gap between serve and the +1 shot is short, and a flat, low ball that gives the opponent no time to recover. The horizontal power position satisfies all three requirements at once: preparation is roughly 0.1s faster with no backswing loop, it still generates real racquet-head speed through the late flip, and the flatter trajectory keeps the ball low. That's why he hasn't switched to heavier topspin even though it might look "safer" — a full topspin loop needs an extra 0.05–0.08 seconds that would break the timing of the whole pattern.

What to Actually Take From This

A fair warning first: you cannot and should not try to copy the whole mechanism. Sinner built this from age fourteen with Piatti, and his wrist and forearm were conditioned specifically for it over years. Forcing this onto an untrained wrist is a real tendonitis risk.

That said, two safe principles translate to any level of player:

Hold the off-hand out longer. Extending the non-dominant arm toward the ball and holding it there longer builds a more stable rotational axis.

Drive the racquet forward instead of brushing up. Rather than trying to brush up hard for topspin, focus on extension toward the target.

A drill for the first principle: shadow-swing with an empty 500ml water bottle. Hold it like a racquet, point the "head" of the bottle right and the base left (the horizontal power position), then flip it gently. Three sets of 20 reps, no ball, at half speed — the goal is the feel of the mechanism, not raw speed.

A drill for the second: have a partner feed slow, high balls. Focus purely on relaxing the wrist through the flip and driving the racquet forward. Listen for the "whoosh" of racquet speed rather than watching for a fast ball. Stop if your wrist hurts after ten minutes.
