10-Minute Volley Drill (Redirect)

A short, focused routine built around Volley: Redirect Instead of Swing — the entire point is to redirect the ball's own pace rather than swing at it.

1. Off-Court Feel (2 minutes)

Hold the racket in a continental grip. Deliberately loosen your hold until you can wiggle the handle 2-3mm inside the palm, using only the thumb and index finger. Tap the string bed against your other palm — you should hear a dull thud, not a sharp clack.

2. Wall Volleys From 6 Feet (4 minutes)

Stand 6 feet from a wall. No backswing — just set the face. Say "redirect" out loud as the ball hits, 20 balls in a row.

Goal: the ball dies at your feet with backspin. If that happens, you're doing it correctly.

3. Slice Practice (2 minutes)

Same setup as the wall volleys, but cut slightly down and through — high to low, about 6 inches of travel — to create backspin that keeps the ball low after the bounce.

Cues: "take the pace away." "Soft hand, firm wrist, slightly open face, short slice."

4. Cradle Volley (2 minutes)

At the net, with no backswing: press on the handle with the off-hand, bring the shoulders in, cradle the racket close to the torso, elbows out. Pull back only 6 inches — the impulse you need is already there. This is the same shape covered in Tensegrity and the Cradle.

Check: you shouldn't feel like you're "punching" the volley. The racket face stays stable because the whole upper body tenses as one piece.

Total: 10 Minutes

Segment Time
Off-court feel 2 min
Wall volleys 4 min
Slice practice 2 min
Cradle 2 min

Common Traps

  • Squeezing on contact — kills feel, the ball pops up.
  • Swinging from the shoulder — breaks timing, misses the sweet spot.
  • Palm fully glued to the grip — loses the mini-pivot that gives the racket its feel.
