VE Drills — Vertical Explosion

Four drills for training the VE (Vertical Explosion Serve) engine — turning the legs into the launchpad and the trunk into the spring that the serve actually runs on.

Drill 1: Loading Drill (Compress the Spring)

Goal: reach 2.5x body weight of downward force.

How:

  1. Set up in the trophy pose.
  2. Bend the knees slowly to a 100-120 degree angle.
  3. Jump straight up as hard as you can — no ball involved.
  4. Feel the whole sole of the foot "pushing" the ground away.

Drill 2: Hip-Sling Drill (Independent Hip Rotation)

Goal: build the X-factor — the separation between hip rotation and shoulder rotation.

How: keep the shoulders pointed backward while the hips alone rotate forward. Feel the fascia stretch tight along the side of the ribs. That stretch is the stored energy the shoulders will release a beat later.

Drill 3: Whip-Snap

Goal: optimize internal rotation (IR) of the hitting shoulder.

How: hold the racket and focus purely on rotating the upper arm around its own axis, without moving the shoulder itself. Picture wringing out a wet towel — that twisting sensation is what internal rotation should feel like.

Drill 4: Trophy Hold + Slow Release

Goal: optimize the sequencing of the whole chain.

How: get into the trophy pose, hold for 3 seconds, then release slowly, segment by segment — legs, then hips, then shoulders, then arm. Film it and run the footage through AI analysis to check the timing gaps between segments.
