The 5 Rs of Great Tennis Movement
David Bailey
The 5 Rs framework is the cornerstone of the Bailey Method for teaching tennis movement. This article breaks down each component of the movement cycle.
The 5 Rs Framework
1. Ready
The split step and ready position - being prepared before the opponent strikes the ball.
2. Read
Recognizing the incoming ball's trajectory, speed, spin, and depth.
3. React
The first move and initial footwork response to the ball.
4. Respond
The contact move - moving to, striking, and finishing the shot.
5. Recover
The recovery step and preparation for the next shot.
These five components create a complete movement cycle that repeats on every shot in tennis.
